One of our recent favorites was a kitchen remodel in a stunning historic home. Our goal? To honor the home’s original character while introducing modern functionality. The result was a space that feels both timeless and current.

We did a double-stacked countertop to give detailed look that echoes the layered elegance of early 20th-century kitchens. We added the island to maximize work space for the home owner who loves to bake. While they resemble marble, we opted for quartz, a more durable and low-maintenance material that’s ideal for busy households. This blend of vintage charm and modern resilience is what sets our designs apart.
Uncovering the Past to Design for the Future
When we first stepped into this historic kitchen, it looked very different from what you see today. Much of the space was closed off with walls, making it feel smaller and less functional. Where the refrigerator now stands was a laundry room tucked awkwardly into the kitchen. Since the homeowners no longer needed laundry facilities in the kitchen, we removed the dividing walls to open up the space. We relocated the refrigerator to that area, instantly improving the flow and usability.

But the biggest surprise came during the demolition.
Behind a section of wall where we now have those beautiful green cabinets, we discovered something special: an old, covered-up fireplace. The original mantle was still intact, hidden for decades. Once revealed, this architectural gem altered the entire design’s direction. We knew immediately that we had to embrace this piece of the home’s history.
By integrating the fireplace alcove into the cabinetry layout, we created a unique focal point, one that blends period charm with practical, modern storage. The cabinets in this area now extend a full 25 inches, adding significant storage while still respecting the original footprint of the fireplace. We also never knew there was a butler pantry underneath the stairs. Previous owners had it completely covered with a wall.
When Mark Durniak with Wellspring Contracting who did all of the tear out and install, discovered the Butler’s Pantry, we immediately shifted our focus to ensure that we preserved all the history in this exceptional space. We ensured that the cabinets beside it all worked out and incorporated the Butler’s pantry by painting the door the same color as the cabinets to make it all blend.
A couple of other things we found along the way were that the ceilings were at different heights before we started.
We removed those drop ceilings, and we found even more height in the kitchen, which we ended up retaining to make it look a little more grand and spacious.

Before Mark Started construction, we realized that, unfortunately, the original hardwood floors were not there.
When it came to the floors in the kitchen, the clients also wanted something straightforward to clean with water, which led us to choose a luxury vinyl plank. We used a 3-inch luxury vinyl plank with a border.
You would have seen a lot more decorative detailing in the flooring back then, so we stayed with a design element from that era. However, we used modern materials, which are easier to care for and require less maintenance, much like we did with the countertops. Instead of going with traditional marble, we kept that look but went with the material that we have today, that’s easier to maintain
Discoveries like this are why we love working with historic homes. You never know what’s hiding behind the walls, but with careful planning and flexible design, we can turn every surprise into a standout feature.
Whether your home is 10 years old or 110, our design team is ready to bring out its full potential, preserving character where it counts and improving functionality where it’s needed most. Every home has a story, and your kitchen should help tell it. Whether you’re preserving history or writing a new chapter, we’re here to help craft a space that’s uniquely yours.
